Yvette Hlophe

Dr. Hlophe's is a Senior Lecturer, Department of Physiology at the School of Medicine, University of Pretoria. Her research is at the forefront of innovative cancer treatments, having fostered successful collaborations with renowned national and international institutions, including the University of Pretoria, North-West University, Fort Hare University, and the Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology in Nigeria. Her academic excellence has earned her several prestigious accolades, including being a finalist for the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Teaching Cluster Award and first runner-up in the Faculty of Health Sciences Teaching & Learning Awards at the University of Pretoria in 2021.

Dr. Hlophe was nominated for the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards in recognition of her contributions to academia and research. She has also played an integral role in curriculum development for primary healthcare worker training in Africa as part of a transnational project with the Afe Babalola Foundation and King’s College London.Dr. Hlophe’s work is a testament to her dedication to research landscapes, promoting collaborations that not only advance cancer research but also contribute to the growth and development of health education. Her impact continues to resonate within the scientific community, as she leads efforts to address pressing global health challenges.

There is a growing awareness that, despite various collaborative initiatives, African-European healthcare relations continue to face structural challenges. Chief among these are power imbalances that allow well-funded European stakeholders to set agendas often misaligned with the realities on the ground in Africa.
